Group Leader: Monica Landoni
Monica lectures in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. She has completed a PhD on the role of the paper book metaphor in electronic book design and has several years' research experience in projects related to IR and electronic publishing including STAMP and MultiBrowser. Her special interests include digital books and libraries and interface design and evaluation. She was Project Manager on EBONI (Electronic Books ON-screen Interface) and Librarian Adviser on the JISC-funded Promoting the Uptake of Ebooks in Further and Higher Education.

Noorhidawati Abdullah
Noorhidawati is a PhD student in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, currently researching back of the ebook indexing. Her interests include indexing, ebooks and natural language processing.

Glen Campbell
Glen is a PhD student in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. His interests lie in university-based publishing projects, in particular those involving electronic journals or e-prints, and his initial research has looked into the question of whether the journal is a suitable metaphor for some areas of digital scholarly communication. He is also interested in the future of the paper journal.

Fabio Crestani
Fabio is a Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. His research interests include:

  • Hypermedia - automatic authoring of hypertext and hypermedia using automatic techniques of link discovery.
  • Information Retrieval - modelling of the uncertainty in the matching process using logical-probabilistic models.
  • Information Filtering - use of soft computing techniques for adaptive query-document matching.
  • Digital Libraries - use of speech for interactive information access.

Forbes Gibb
Forbes is a Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. His research interests are information strategy, knowledge management and language-based information retrieval systems. He has been involved in several major research projects including: SIMPR, which developed a knowledge-based information storage and retrieval system; STAMP, which developed a client-server probabilistic information retrieval system for English, Spanish and Catalan; AUTOSOFT, which is developing systems to support software re-use; and MIND, which is developing systems to support access to distributed multimedia digital libraries.

Emma Nicol
Emma is a research assistant in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. She is currently pursuing a PhD under the supervision of Monica Landoni. Her interests lie in the areas of interaction design for children, children's searching behaviour, digital inclusion and interface design and evaluation. She is currently involved in the WEBKIT project whose aim is to develop Tangible User Interfaces to Web information for children of school age.

Norshuhada Shiratuddin
Shuhada is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Information Technology, Universiti Utara Malaysia. She recently completed a PhD in the department on ebook and ebook builder models for smart school environments. The models aim at providing users with flexible e-books that cater for different learning styles.

Ruth Wilson
Ruth is a Research Fellow in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, and was previously researcher on EBONI, which produced a set of guidelines for designing electronic textbooks, based on the results of extensive evaluations involving students and lecturers. Prior to this she completed an MSc in Information and Library Studies at Strathclyde University, which included several months' research into the importance of appearance in the design of Web books.
